Softshell is the term used to describe a new kind of outerwear that is more breathable, flexible, and comfortable than the professional outdoor sportswear, such as skiwear. These fabrics are worn as outer or mid layer. They can be elastic that are mostly bonded with knits, or sometimes are bonded woven. Windproof, breathable, water repellent and sometimes even waterproof, these fabrics are used for jackets or pants. Softshell is ideally suited to dry-ish weather.  Softshell will keep you comfortable in a light rain but is not made for heavy rainfall or storms. Its waterproof function is still not as good as skiwear. Since the surface of the softshell fabric is mostly made of fine woven fabric, it does provide considerable warmth while being super breathable to prevent wearer from overheating when being active. Softshell jackets have the advantage of being windproof in their structure, which also helps to resist the chill in and keep you warm.
